The Best Beaches in New York

Summer is officially here, which means it’s time to head to the great beaches that NYC and the surrounding area have to offer! Whether you like just strolling on the boardwalk or diving into the ocean, here are some of the best New York-area beaches:

Coney Island

The iconic NYC beach, once considered “the playground of the world,” is still incredibly popular with a usually packed beach. This may not be the best choice for those looking for a peaceful dip in the ocean, but is still a great place to spend the summer day, strolling the famous boardwalk with a chance to ride Deno’s Wonder Wheel , get rattled on the legendary Cyclone, and enjoy a hot dog or some at the original Nathan’s.

Rockaway Beach

This 5.5-mile beach and boardwalk is another popular destination, as it is the only legal surfing beach in NYC. Make sure to try out some arepas from Caracas.

Jacob Riis Beach

The beach at Jacob Riis Park, referred to as “The People’s Beach,” is typically less crowded than some of the other beaches in the area. The beach does attract lots of foodies for its Riis Park Beach Bazaar, which features a large variety of food vendors to enjoy on your beach day.

Fort Tilden

On the same stretch of land as Rockaway and Jacob Riis beaches, the semi-hidden Fort Tilden is the quietest beach in NYC. The beach is very no-frills, with no lifeguards or other attractions to speak of. If you’re looking for a beach day without being bothered, this is the place for you.

Jones Beach

A bit out of the city in Long Island is Jones Beach, another popular beach destination in New York with lots of food options, including the Boardwalk Cafe. The beach also features a mini golf course and the Jones Beach ampitheater, which hosts concerts throughout the summer.

South Beach

Yes, it is on Staten Island, but South Beach is another great option to head to a less crowded beach in NYC. The beach features a great boardwalk with an excellent view of the Verrazzano Bridge.

No matter which NYC-area beach you choose, you are bound to have an enjoyable summer day.
